How I created this painting
Angus is painted using, well, just about every kind of paint I have. He is 90cm square and is painted onto a 38mm gallery grade block canvas. I painted him using three different painting styles. There is a base layer of blue enamels that was applied directly from the pot onto the canvas to provide me with a base layer which was then covered by a second layer of acrylics (the colours you can see weaving in and out), spray paints and textured paints. I still wasn't happy with what I was looking at so I mixed blue and white glosses into a thinner medium and went into a 'controlled pour' to give the piece some balls.
Why I created it
Originally I had thoughts of floating different shades of blue enamel around the canvas to see what effect I could get by blending these together. Things seldom turn out the way I plan them so I carried on until I got something that I was happy with.
What's going on in this painting?
Take a moment to pause and look at the black lines. They help give balance to the blue which can be quite dominant. The black accents dart and weave around the painting as if they were alive - not knowing where they are heading next. The blue drips add definition and structure, holding the other colours together in a kind of delicate balance - even to the point at which the two colours of drip look suspended over the background layers. You see lots of detail as you get closer to Angus. He is best viewed with a single spotlight but is equally magnificent in bright daylight. Due to the varied types of paints I have used there is great tonal change to the textures and a stark contrast between shiny and dull. Despite looking very random the pouring technique I use is very controlled and I know exactly where each stroke goes. Angus is a very vibrant piece of Abstract Art. I don't sign my paintings on the front - this gives you freedom to hang it anyway you want to.
