How I created this painting
Barry is painted with acrylic paints. He measures 122cm x 76cm and is painted onto a 38mm gallery grade block canvas. I used seven colours of acrylic paint, some water and four brush sizes to create Barry. I actually started painting this as horizontal stripes in various colours but soon decided this looked far too boring.
Why I created it
I painted this after a particularly difficult day which may explain the dark richness of the colours. I wanted to create a piece that was easy on the eye yet dramatic too.
What's going on in this painting?
Okay so it's a little fiery and angry in places but I love the shapes that are created, especially that long red swoop with the hard orange edge which, for me, dominates the piece. Interestingly there are some very subtle colour changes in this painting - you can pick out yellow, gold, red, mocha, auburn, ochre etc.. depending on lighting conditions and where you view it from. Like so many of my paintings, Barry seems to change constantly throughout the day. He looks great on white or cream walls.
