How I created this painting

Tyler is painted onto a 38mm gallery grade block canvas and measures 122cm x 76cm (48" x 30"). He was created using red, white, black and grey gloss and matt paints, thinned using my secret formula. I used a PVA base on which I layered alternate colours of red and black using a controlled pouring technique. This was repeated for white and then again for red and black - with a little drying time in between. Finally I added grey accents to lift the colours together. I didn't use a single brush to paint Tyler.

Why I created it

I would happily paint in red, white and black all day long if I could. I don't need encouragement. I have a love of circular things which, although odd, is very satisfying. There's something very linear and complete about them. No messy bits. Great subject matter for painting.

What's going on in this painting?

Firstly, I can't decide which way up looks best. This is a good thing as it gives you freedom to decide what works for you. There is a distinctive harshness to the red tones which is complimented by the softness of the curves and circles. Some of the red paint has formed really wild and crazy patterns on the canvas that you really notice up close. This is tempered thankfully by the white paint which breaks up the anger of the red. I was careful to compose some balanced circular swirls and shapes in varying sizes in an effort to lighten the painting. There is a definite double swirl in the centre which provides an anchor point to the painting. Allow the eye to follow this round and you find yourself effortlessly off to another one and so on. I was conscious about giving some circles real depth whilst others have very loose and fluid lines, this was done to avoid the painting becoming overbearing and angry considering the boldness of the three colours. There is a hint of slate grey in the accents on some of the swirls which was added to release the tension of the black. Tyler is a great example of a painting that shouldn't work but does. That's probably due to the care and thought that went into painting it, even though it looks like a random collection of wavy lines. There's nothing random about any of my paintings, let me reassure you.
