Cold weather blues
Posted by Swarez on January 8, 2010
On days when the temperatures fall off the Kelvin scale I get particularly jittery about my paintings. In part this is due to the fact that my home studio (nee sieve, as it leaks like one) is about ten feet from the backdoor of the house and not IN it. I have none of the comforts of home even though I’m so close to it. Despite my best efforts to keep the warmth in and the continental ice shelf out my efforts are always in vain. The ice wins every time.
I dared to venture out in the wee small hours of the night last night, embarking on some ill-feted exploration of the barren wastes of my back yard. After what seemed an eternity I reached base camp (the studio) and breathed a sigh of relief (which promptly froze in mid air and dropped onto my slippers). Alas I had ventured out without proper thought for provisions, lighting, clothes or fluids and it soon became apparent that I was in danger of being left stranded outside to die. Then it got worse, to my utter disbelief I realized the unthinkable – I forgot to bring the keys for the lock.
Looking at the task that faced me would faze even the hardiest of men – but I knew, deep down, that I had no choice but to turn around and go back. On and on I walked for eight or maybe even ten seconds, battling the harshness and unforgiving brutality of the tundra. It was close, very close, but I made it back home. Weary, cold and in desperate need of an Espresso, I slumped in a heap in the kitchen. To think I had come so close to getting into the studio only to be thwarted by my own poor planning right at the last minute.
On a brighter note however, I have driven to the work studio today and now sit upstairs in my office with two fan heaters on. Suddenly, my heroic tale of battling mother nature seems all the more fulfilling. May have to wait until Spring though before I venture out again. Walking ten feet in Minus 12 C just to check on your canvases is not my idea of fun.

You are so lucky you didn’t attempt to cup my breasts after you’d been outside in the cold!
Ooh err! Now there’s nice thought…
great blog. I found it on google and i think i will come back later
Thankyou. You’re very kind
I was scanning something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your position on it is diametrically opposed to what I read before. I am still pondering over the opposite points of view, but I’m leaning heavily toward yours. And no matter, that’s what is so great about contemporary democracy and the marketplace of thoughts on-line.
Thanks for the great information, I really love to spend time here going through these posts
