The sheer exuberance of the riotous and rather magnificent central feature never fails to make me smile. Huge swathes of solid, confident colour dominate the graded background layers. It really does remind me of dancing figures; free to express themselves as they wish and rejoicing in a defiant celebration of the joy of movement. I don’t know about you but I think they’re all holding hands at the top?

The dominance of the red figuration is tempered somewhat by the black ones that lie behind. A clever use of directional change prevents you from scanning the painting too quickly whilst still maintaining that all important left to right movement – something that was essential to get motion into the piece. One of the very cool things I love about this painting is the way the red has dried – forming complex ridges in the paint. You’ll see what I mean in some of the close up shots. I wanted to get this effect to add an extra dimension to the piece.

Glance across cascading waterfall-like splashes; deep, thick ravines of paint that ebb and flow; moving tides of colour that caress every curve; organic elements of green placed carefully within contrasting blues; accented whites that dance freely across the canvas… the list goes on. Of course there are other colours in here too; a liberal dash of red, the merest suggestion of blue and of course black and white. I have been very meticulous with the composition in this piece; oranges dance above the main orange layer whilst black does exactly the same below the purple – and separated by the same distances so that the forms are not unbalanced. Nothing sits too high or too low to compromise the lines. Every colour and every application is spaced at a common interval, something that can prove challenging when you’re attempting to create forms like these. I have turned apparent randomness into a precise linear expression. Study it with a slight squint if that helps…

So here comes the ‘B’ word again – balance. Whether you look top to bottom or left to right, between colour applications or through them; each part of this painting has been balanced so that no one part of it dominates. I couldn’t allow that to happen as you would miss the real heart of this abstract painting – the detail. Take a click through some of the close ups underneath and you’ll see what I mean. One of the many things I love about this painting is the use of muted tones. For such a celebration of the very essence of life it would have been easy to go for the most uplifting and bright colours I could find, but that would miss the point completely. This painting is all about beginnings – the point at which things start and grow. Use of muted turquoise and blue has been offset dramatically with raging silver and hallowed greys and blacks; allowing the central figuration to come alive on its own whilst still being drip-fed by the background.

It feels to me like it’s about to explode into something huge – I can feel this cocktail of energy bristling with life and excitement, just waiting to get going. I imagine this single strand of creation multiplying a trillion times in the blink of an eye. Perhaps the real beauty of this painting lies in the fragility of the shapes and how they are held together by the smallest of links, like an expression of strength and weakness existing at the same time.

It’s good to mix things up once in a while. I love trying new compositions and this piece is no exception. I go from wild to singular very easily in my work because I like to see where I can take a single idea. With this painting my mantra was simple – less is more. There’s no way you can appreciate the beautiful yellow and orange colours if you cover them up so I decided to let them sing on their own merit with some cleverly placed mood accents and shaping in key areas.

There is still all the movement you would expect from my art yet it is tempered by the colours; which is what this painting is all about for me. It’s not difficult to look at, it’s very easy to live with and takes no complex decoding. It is purely a celebration of colour contrasts and blends. It’s a good thing to be able to appreciate something in a very simplistic way – and how could you go wrong by hanging a piece of sunshine on your own wall?

Somehow the opening lyrics of a song by Tim Minchin echo resoundingly about my head when I look at this painting. We’ve all got our own world; our Earth, the place we live in. What we choose to make of it is up to us and no-one else. When I painted this piece I became very mindful of that as the figuration began to emerge. The large expressions of white that bound across the whole painting bristle with energy and life – rather like the earth that we really do live in.

Dark is tempered by light; hard is mirrored by soft and all the intertwining colours serve up a bold yet serene palette of tones that shift from the ephemeral to the tactile. I like the patterns that radiate from the centre and encircle the piece; a great contrast to the density of colour that’s very delicate and detailed as you move in closer. Sound familiar? I imagine my world when I look at this painting, and all that goes on within it. Thankfully there’s so much going on in the painting that you can see it as a model for your own world too; somewhere unique, amazing and very, very wonderful.

In order to convey a message it’s sometimes necessary to be a little less vocal and a little more restrained. Very often the joy of abtractism is to find and ponder the meaning of what is and what is not being communicated. Sometimes less really is more. Venus Isle is a very easy painting to live with; her sweeping curves and effervescent lightness produce calm and tranquility. Often there is much more to see than what you can actually see…. Venus Isle creates a refreshing and unique moment each time you look at her. Her soft and gentle colouration blends into complex and balanced paint forms that effortlessly bounce from one shade to another, never too heavy and never too light. I don’t often leave room around the canvas but found huge pleasure in creating a degree of containment for the main part of the painting; I feel the arcs and flows needed it in order to bring stability and also for you to get the most out of the central part of the painting.

I have always been a fan of underwater pioneer Jaques Cousteau and this painting takes inspiration in part from the album of the same name by Jean-Michel Jarre. I chose to make some of the black and white shaping look like water itself by blending certain chemicals with my paints, it has a very wet look to it; I like that. The addition of small, more intricate black shapes further suggest thoughts of the small sitting alongside the big; a representation of the scale of the ocean’s ecosystems in balance and harmony.

The base layer was gradually built up using a large number of individual applications – each of subtly changing tones – bubbling up to a crescendo of deep blues and translucent greens that ebb and flow in a constant motion around the canvas; very much in the way our ocean currents move. I wanted to get this feeling of movement into the very heart of the painting. You can see this in action on some of the close up shots.

You only have to look at some of the close up shots to see what I mean. Bright vivid primary colours dart and weave around the canvas like Michael Flatley on acid. One of the joys of this kind of painting is its ability to balance control against chaos; always a huge challenge. Black is neither too heavy nor too light, the red is perfectly tempered by the blues and the white gently lifts all these elements together to produce a very singular painting that mesmerizes you wherever you look. Some of the techniques I have used have been influenced by the works of Jackson Pollock; never an easy act to follow.

If I ever stood a chance of harnessing the sheer unbridled passion that painting can produce then I think it would be perfectly expressed in this compelling blue, white and red composition. You don’t have to understand it; that misses the point. Just enjoy it for what it is; a pure release of shapes, forms and colour that work in total harmony. These kinds of paintings take real amounts of effort to get right – from the underpinning of the base layers and blends through to mixing viscosities, applicators, coverage rates and balance, proof that you really do get out what you put in.
