I make no apologies for being in love with these three colours. I paint many pieces in these three basic hues. Normally I create some complex and over the top effects inside my pieces but with Memphis I thought differently. I wanted to really convey a sense of drama with big slabs of black and red and then work to bring these two forces together to produce a sensual, rich and dramatic painting – something I feel I have achieved really well. The sweeping arc serves as a container for the maelstrom of applications within it without harming the authority of the rest of the painting. Memphis is powerful and strong yet subtle and controlled.
