Dorcas is painted onto a 38mm block canvas and measures 100cm x 80cm. He was created using enamel gloss and acrylic paints. I painted a base coat of white onto which I applied layers of red and black. It is finished of with accents of white and black.
I reckon I’m just enjoying making some interesting patterns and shapes at the moment. Makes a change from my drip paintings.
I have always found red, black and white very soothing and easy colours to work with. Perhaps it’s the contrast between them that works so well? There’s plenty of interesting shapes in this painting, some obvious but many subtle. I like the way that the four main arc shapes hold the eye and give some perspective and softness to what would otherwise be a very harsh and angry piece. As I painted it in an oil-based gloss paint there’s plenty of light reflection as you walk around it – adding another interesting effect. Big applications of paint help to give Dorcas an interesting texture.
