Galahad is painted onto a 38mm gallery block canvas and measures 100cm x 80cm. He was created using industrial gloss enamel paints of various thinned consistencies and using different chemicals to do so. I built up a base layer of black then began to add different colurs of blues and greens working from the bottom upwards.
Well, the first thing I notice is that this is a new departure in my style. I normally apply paint on the floor rather than on this piece where I applied it vertically. Of course I had to do this to get the drip effect I wanted. The key to doing this kind of painting is the consistency of the paints – too thick and they will not run enough, too thin and the whole lots runs into each other to the bottom of the canvas. Years of paint mixing has taught me how to blend thinning agents correctly to get the right result. The painting is not overcrowded either – instead the eye doesn’t feel confused as it wanders over the textures and forms. Adding the white accents has lifted the piece very subtly.
I can get a view of trees at twilight or of jellyfish in the cool dark seas. What do you see?
