It seems to be with an increasing frequency that I find myself acting against opinion. Those of us who choose to swim against the tide, in the face of the unbelievers are the ones who can get to experience life on our own terms.
A healthy dose of ‘Fuck it!’ comes in handy for even the most demanding of circumstances. Everyone reaches a point where they can’t take anymore of the bullshit and pretentiousness that conformity expects of us. Do you ever wake up and think ‘Is this as good as it gets?’. I do. And no matter how good or bad that moment I am in may be there inevitably follows a nervous anxiety to break out and go nuts.
Everything has to have a game plan
So you may expect there to be no comprehensive plan behind something I appear to have painted without thought? Wrong. The difference here is that there is still a plan in my head – it just happens to be a mad one. And by my own admission this one is bonkers. Amen to that!
In fact – and hold on to you dangly bits here – the very process of trying to be as loose and crazy as I can makes my brain work harder than normal. The decisions can be excruciating, not from the point of view of hoping it appeals to a potential buyer, but from stopping myself doing what I normally do and making myself go the opposite way. I mean, just look at the colour combination for starters.
I often think ‘What can I do that is the opposite of what I always do?’ or ‘No! Let’s use something fluorescent or luminous for a change’. Then there’s the way in which to use the paint. OK, so I have done other loops and swoosh paintings but nothing really like this.
I want to break free
You’d be surprised to learn that it looks remarkably awesome on a white wall. And I’m not just saying that. Your reaction may not be favourable towards it and that’s just fine my me, that’s not the point. I guess it will be the precious few that will embrace this slice of rebelliousness. It’s not meant to be a popularity contest – a bit like life really. You just get on as best you can until you break out of your neat little box you and find your own way.
When you get that opportunity you’ll be amazed how different the world looks. Sometimes it ‘aint pretty but at least it’s yours and you own it. The worst thing you can do is live in someone else’s shoes. What the hell kind of life is that? If I could choose any recent painting that reminds me of this it would be Casual Delusions.
It really is, as far as I’m concerned, two fucking fingers up to all the people who think they own me and know better.
I’d rather stay true to that and go bankrupt than paint for box-dwellers and flat-liners. God help them all.
