Structure and intent

When I say ‘without foundation’ I mean that it’s as pure in terms of what lies behind it as I have ever created. Sometimes it becomes necessary to really dig down and empty oneself. Doing the kind of mental laundry we all need from time to time.

Much of this painting is simply my desire to work with an unusual palette of colour and partly just to let the forms and shapes dictate to me where I should be going next. For me this process is a much about confidence as it is about letting go. I know I have to have both in equal measures otherwise I tend to hold back a little.

I always approach every painting with a game plan or structure – even f it’s very loose. Sometimes it’s the opposite and I have to be very controlled over what goes where. But with this painting I was as free as free can be.

Chocolate and more chocolate!

For once I have chosen not to assault you with primary colours; instead opting for a much earthier and natural tone. That means an abundance of chocolate brown. it’s not a colour i use very often but for some strange reason it became the primary focus colour for this abstract.

Sure it’s got its dark points (hence the inclusion of ‘thunder’ in the title) but it also contains rich, charismatic tonal shifts that bob and weave around the heavy bits. It has some incredible detailing too and I’m sure you could pull out a myriad of different things in it when you start looking.

The prefect size and shape

It is very narrow in shape, making it ideal where height is at a premium. If you’re looking to connect an inside space with an outside one then this could be perfect. It’s small enough (like anything I do is actually small?) to go above a sofa or fireplace and it can also be hung vertically if you have a stairwell or narrow wall to fill.
