Up and Away

A small sized, cheerful original artwork painted in acrylics

Occasionally I use acrylic paints instead of enamels. When I do I tend to go mad, and with much satisfaction I may add.
Trees, skies, sunshine, nature – I’m certain you can pick out all manner of references. Lovely.

It’s not often I break off to paint in acrylics – it’s normally my beloved enamels that form the backbone of my work. However, it’s nice to have a change once in a while and Up and Away is the result of one of these breaks. In fact it’s been painted for a while but has always seemed to get missed in the general chaos of running a busy studio and gallery.

Thankfully I’ve got around to photographing it, which has given me a welcome reminder of how light this painting really feels. There are no secret techniques, no mysterious formulas or effects at work. It’s tubes of paint, a stack of applicators and a pile of CD’s to listen to. Nothing more than that and a little imagination.

It’s good to be relieved of the technicalities of what I do and the constant need to experiment. This is a style I have painted in for a few years now – just on the odd occasion though – when the world is still, the jobs lists have been done and I feel like I want to reconnect with things a little. It’s grounded but uplifting; qualities I like in a piece of art.

I get a sense of the tropical when I look at it and imagine myself atop a coastal path surrounded by palms and flowers, maybe the sound of the sea is echoing reassuringly in my ears. I can definitely hear the breeze too.

The ability of an abstraction to transport you to another place is always a source of engagement for me, never ceasing to amaze me no matter what painting I’m looking at. If you get an instant reaction like mine then that’s great. Of course, you’ll no doubt see other things too – that’s even better.

This original artwork is small enough to fit in with your life, colourful enough to bring a little sun and light into your space and with more than a hint of discretion, gives you all the bang of a contemporary abstract without the need to suffocate or shock. Can’t ask more of the painting than that.
