About this artwork

The unique Orion

There are many things I like about this resin and crystal artwork. Perhaps the most important one is its understated nature. The colours are essentially whisps of green and blue but are cleverly interwoven with different textured clear cast resin and crystals.

I have discovered that working with a clear material is all well and good but too much of it together looks boring; there’s a need to add some kind of medium to the resin pours to stop it all becoming mundane.

Blocks and shapes

So we have a mixture of interesting blocks and cubes here. There are only five on this piece so I had to think about their composition and placement as whole as well as individually.

Of particular interest is the solid green one that, on closer inspection, is in fact a swirling cacophony of green pearl powder. This is thanks to a gorgeous pigment range called Pearlex. I have a number of their colours and each one is magnificent. The green one used here is no exception.

We have a similar story with the small blue cube but this one is made with a dark blue ink instead of powder. Inks add an interesting dimension to the finished block. In fact, if you get really close to this one, it’s marginally separated into two layers but still using the same ink.

Ring bling!

The ring shape is a clear cast one but also includes a selection of small silver coated crystals inside it. These really catch the light as you move around and add a touch of glamour to the top half of the artwork.

It’s a similar story where the other two resin cubes are concerned. One being almost clear barring the sprinkling of holographic flakes on top and the other one is filled with a non-reflective clear crystal and some additional holographic flakes.

It’s all about the base

It really is a thing of beauty. A reflective and shimmering metallic silver liquid metal compound was added to the resin mix and then poured on slowly so that it formed around all the raised blocks and shapes.

When this had cured (3 days) I began to bond the crystal selection to the surface (the crystal count is 24 by the way). I kept the colour choices simple and in keeping with the rest of the piece.
