Using red and blue
Of Earth and Sea is a small red and blue modern art painting that’s set inside an aluminium frame. I have done a few over the years that have been based around red and blue but few have captured me like this one.
I had always planned to be quite definite with a horizon point as I wanted to make a clean distinction between a top and bottom half. Just because I use thoughts of the sea and sky as my inspiration behind it doesn’t mean you have to do the same. But it’s nice to know where the subject matter is based so you can dive in a bit further!
Red and blue can be harsh colours when put together in a small space and they don’t tend to mix too well with each other either, so when I’m mentally arranging things in my head I get very focused on the painting’s construction, paint volumes, application methods and process times constantly.
Finishing things off
The painting is finished with a 2mm mount that’s set inside a laser-cut aluminium frame. This gets covered with a Plexiglass (acrylic) front (a high quality PVC alternative to glass). This can be removed if you wish.
