About this painting

All things warm and cosy

It’s not hard to feel warm when you stand in front of a golden yellow sun. Aside from the physical warmth it brings I also think the colour is so strongly associated with it that you can’t fail to be warmed up simply by looking at it.

So the colour selection for this new painting was easy once I had the yellow established. The secondary focus colour is a beautiful deep maroon with hints of red, ochre and subtle top notes of lilac and raspberry (yes, this is exactly the kind of conversation I have with my pigment supplier and I promise you we’re not mad!)

Amazing base

It’s so tricky to show you the background layer in all its beauty but let me tell you this – it features some phenomenal textured striations of paint all over it.

This effect was created with some accelerant chemicals and has resulted in something that has gone way beyond my expectations. The way the light picks up the textures is crazy.

The maroon colour also grounds everything and brings out the joy of the light. Contrast is a good thing – it helps you see the light from the dark.

Creating the loop

The loop is basically a one-shot deal.

It really is shit or bust when you apply all the paint in one go. I would very much like to describe the way in which I spent hours and hours doing this and that but the truth is, on this one anyway, I didn’t.

On some of my other loops and swoops paintings I have been very cautious, and mindful, in applying the main body of paint – often returning to the canvas time after time to get each application right.

In this one I didn’t. I applied the entire loop in one rotation.

Practice makes perfect

Think that’s a cop out? Well, it may surprise you to know that I practiced first. And quite a lot too. Nine times in fact. And that is entirely down to me getting an understanding of how this particular paint mix would behave once applied to the canvas surface.

I had to practice or risk screwing up a beautiful background, and I simply couldn’t do that. So getting a single rotational pour to form an almost perfect circle is not something that just happens. Like anything that looks easy there’s usually a mountain of pain (and paint) that lies behind it.

The result is spectacular. Just enough of everything, in the right proportions and with the right colours in the right place.
