About this painting

The perfect shape and size?

Tower of Stone is a small black and gold abstract painting with a physical size that will help it fit into almost any space.

Squares are great, and I love using them, but for me the perfect shape for any kind of painting is a rectangle and one with this ratio (not far off the Golden Mean).

It’s always a personal thing but for some reason it just works so well. Anyway, now we’ve established that the shape is good let’s consider the size. It’s just big enough to give you the buzz of owning a piece of abstract art but without the worry that it will smack you in the face each time you walk past it.

Just enough of everything

Gold is the main focus colour here and is used to maximum effect. It’s a beautiful shimmering metallic tone that reflects and bounces light from every angle – often making it feel bigger than it is. Into this I have fused copper and hints of green, purple and blue.

If you want to give the composition a label then it’s more of a blended and fused style than a stark and bold kind of thing so it’s perfect for a splash of something where you may not have space for a larger painting, or if you want to remind yourself that you still have a pulse without being left short of breath.

A developing personality

It really is about the quiet reassurance that a very mature artwork like this can bring to the space you want it hung in. It shouts just loud enough when it needs to but can also wrap an arm round you when you need it most.

A good abstract should conjour emotions and let you finish the story off for yourself. If it doesn’t it’s either not right for you or it’s not very well executed. Only you can be the judge of that.

Much of this will depend on what you want it for and where you hang it. Let’s face facts – we all have to walk past out art every day so making it work for you is not something you should ever be afraid of questioning.

Finishing touches

The interaction of black in the painting is a critical one, after all this is a black and gold abstract painting! It adds weight and gravity to the much lighter colours and it also acts as a contrast to help you distinguish light from dark. You cannot have one without the other. It’s part of our DNA.

I have mentioned how the metallic gold has wonderful refractive properties but it’s also worth mentioning the way it interacts with other colours. In places I have loaded the paint so that it forms small textured highs and in others I’ve thinned it so that it sucks the light back again and I call those the low points. That is another reminder of the ying and yang of things.

The challenges with smaller paintings is to pack in as much detail and interest as the bigger ones. With Tower of Stone I have definitely succeeded.
