About this painting

The beauty of turquoise

I love this colour. And though it’s sometimes tricky to know what to actually call it (some refer to it as aqua or teal) I just think of it as being turquoise.

So this then is a turquoise and gold abstract art work that features hints of cream and burgundy and a circle of water blue (that’s also up for debate because it looks green to me!).

It’s foundation is that wonderful background colour and, to be honest, it’s actually a colour similar to the ones found on Piaggio scooters – and I’m not kidding – it’s from the same manufacturer!

Laying the foundations

This gorgeous background is fused in one corner with some whisps of yellow and gold and a little of that water blue I mentioned earlier.

The brush strokes are quite pronounced as I like the way that plays against the regularity, and formal nature, of the loops that go over the top.

A slightly lighter shade of turquoise is used in one of the actual foreground loops as I wanted to bring the colour forward to tie all the layers together.

Featuring the primary colour in multiple gradients, on multiple layers, is a neat trick that good abstract artists should be using. It brings a painting together. I could only do it twice because I only have two layers but you get the idea.

Round and round we go

The critical parts of the painting are the loops and circles that sit on top. There are four main ones  – a gold, burgundy, turquoise and water blue one. These were put on to the canvas at fifteen minute intervals so that I could get a particular kind of effect with the paint (waiting allows for a partial ‘skinning’ of the paint and is critical in terms of timing)

That effect is one of ‘puckering’ for want of a better word! I don’t actually know how to describe it but it’s the crinkled raised bits you can see in the close up shots. I was rather keen on doing this with the gold circle as I knew it would create some cool textural elements and also help light reflect better.

However, once I had done the gold one I decided to carry on with the other colours to achieve a similar effect (although all paints are slightly different so the effects are different too).

The other thing to note is the slim, off-white ring that encircles the whole painting. I like the fact that despite the painting’s apparent wildness it’s actually very contained and extremely well balanced. I guess you really can have your cake and eat it then!
