Yellow is an underused colour in my opinion. Perhaps not in the world at at large but it has an unusual place in abstract art and I don’t think it’s a colour that really features prominently or often enough.
So with Flesh and Bone I am using it in a few different shades to compliment the giant radial paint feature that forms the main part of the painting. I’ve used three individual yellow colours and fused them to form some really nice tonal shifts as your eyes move across the background.
There aren’t any opposites fighting each other here. The whole point of using yellow was to show off how marvellous and rich it is and for that I needed a selection of colours that promoted that, not fought against it.
So in came gold and black and a very subtle lilac for a little warmth. It’s a wonderful combination and I shall definitely be using it again. These are blended together to form an engaging top set of layers in a gentle rotating arc shape that features a stack of tiny details.
There are some stunning cell structures and gorgeous flows. There are abrupt stops and gentle pools. Trust me, it’s all going on here.
