All my resin and crystal artworks have a cosmology theme to them. The heavens and the stars fascinate me beyond the comprehension of my tiny little brain.
So in composing Starlight in my head I considered how to include a reference to the moon. What came out of that thought process was a stunning background layer that’s entirely reminiscent of the lunar surface.
You can spot the craters everywhere (although I need to point out that these effects are all flush with the surface – there are no actual indentations on the resin layer).
No, it’s the illusion of craters that makes this addition really cool and this is all thanks to a little chemical wizardry and a lot of trial and error away from the art.
I have featured crystals inside my other four artworks in this series but none have them so densely packed as this one. In fact there are two such cubes in Starlight.
There’s a small one at the top and one, slightly less dense, underneath the blue crystal. They’re amazing actually and because the facets point in all directions at the same time their reflective properties are crazy – it’s literally like standing next to a disco ball, only better!
This is also the only one in the series that has a clear resin ring.
Other notable mentions go to the dense black resin cube with the metallic gold flakes on top (they actually go all the way through if you were to cut them open). There’s a story behind the couple of black cubes on this one and Cassiopeia but I’ll only tell you that if you ask me.
I appreciate there is much to look at with Starlight but for me the star of the show is the big red cube at the heart of the piece.
It was cast in three stages as there are three layers. There’s a delicate marbling effect rising over half way with a looping grey solid pigment mass sat on top. The finish sees more red being added and also a fusion of gold metal flake arranged into a star pattern (see, I told you I liked my cosmology!)
This piece has the highest crystal count (26) and uses a mixture of rhinestones and genuine Swarovski items. The notable addition to this line up is the single blue globe underneath the clear ring.
I got sent this by mistake (it should have been a twelve sided ruby chaton) but it such a pretty thing that I couldn’t help but make use of it. Funny how these things all work out isn’t it?
