Two stunning colours on their own merit but when you put them together they can form some of the most memorable and intense visual experiences.
For The Colour of You I chose three different orange colours and used all of them in a fusion for the background layer. In fact there’s a fourth colour added too in to shape of red. It’s only a splash but it brings a little spiciness to the absolute joy of the oranges that dominate.
The background is a gradient from rich to happy and I did this so that I could give the painting a light and a dark side without deviating from the primary focus colour of orange.
Of course it’s not only orange and blue that carry the painting; most of the other colour groups are also represented and they bring a halo of rainbow-like happiness to the whole piece.
In fact there are 13 individual paint colours used and I chose to blend some of them in with others to create some interesting hybrid tones.
I’ve fused these further into cell structures and enough rivers and valleys to keep you glued to it for hours. Colour is by far the most important part of the whole painting but it’s not the end of the story.
Colour is one thing but it can rarely exist without placing it into some kind of context or defined area. This is where the shape element is key as it helps to define the way in which colours are placed and interpreted.
In keeping with this series of small square radial paintings I kept to a loop format and in this painting used three main applications to get the majority of the paint laid down. After this I began to add all the details in, mainly using my trusted needles and syringes to move the paint around in to the shapes you can see in the photos.
The biggest area of dark paint in this orange and blue painting is kept towards the edges (of the blue) as I didn’t want anything to get in the way of celebrating those bright and varied colours. It’s the same story with the dark purple that you can just about see on the edges; it’s a thin loops the goes round most of the painting and is the darkest bit of all. It’s there to make the painting feel a bit bigger than it is and also to encapsulate the whole composition – helping it feel contained and in a state of constant motion.
